What Size Dump Trailer Do I Need? A Complete Guide
One of the most common questions I get at Englewood Trailer Rental is: “Austin, what size dump trailer do I actually need?” It’s a great question, because choosing the wrong size can mean wasting money on something too big or making multiple trips with something too small.
Whether you’re cleaning out your yard, tackling a construction project, or hauling away roofing debris, the right dump trailer size makes all the difference. Let me walk you through how to pick the perfect one for your job.
Understanding Dump Trailer Sizes
Dump trailers come in three main sizes that we offer here at our Englewood location: 10ft, 12ft, and 14ft models. The size refers to the length of the bed, and that extra space adds up quickly when you’re loading debris. The real difference between them isn’t just the length — it’s the cubic yard capacity, which is what actually determines how much stuff you can haul.
10ft Dump Trailer — 7.6 Cubic Yards
This is my go-to recommendation for smaller jobs and residential cleanouts. At $111/day, it’s the most affordable option and it’s easier to maneuver than larger trailers. The interior is 120″ long by 72″ wide by 41″ high. You can fit about 2–3 pickup truck loads of material in here comfortably.
12ft Dump Trailer — 8.8 Cubic Yards
This is the Goldilocks option — not too big, not too small. At $138/day, the 12ft gives you about 16% more capacity than the 10ft, which is actually more than it sounds when you’re in the middle of a project. This size handles most home renovation debris, yard waste, and small construction jobs without feeling unwieldy.
14ft Dump Trailer — 10.6 Cubic Yards
Our largest option at $149/day, the 14ft is for the bigger jobs. You’re looking at serious capacity here — 10.6 cubic yards means this trailer can handle what would take three or four pickup loads. The GVWR bumps up to 14,000 lbs with a 7,000 lb tandem axle, so it’s built heavier-duty too.
Choosing the Right Size for Your Project
Yard Cleanouts and Home Projects
If you’re cleaning out your yard — trimming trees, clearing brush, getting rid of old garden beds — the 10ft (7.6 cubic yards) is usually perfect. Most residential cleanouts generate less material than people think, and the 7.6 cubic yard capacity is deceptively spacious for yard waste.
Construction Debris and Renovations
Construction debris is heavier and bulkier than yard waste. If you’re doing drywall removal, flooring tear-out, or general demolition work, I’d recommend the 12ft (8.8 cubic yards). That extra 1.2 cubic yards really matters when you’re dealing with framing lumber, drywall sheets, and all the stuff that takes up space fast.
Major Renovations and Commercial Work
Big jobs need big trailers. If you’re gutting a house, doing a commercial cleanup, or handling a major landscaping project with lots of soil and debris, the 14ft (10.6 cubic yards) is worth every penny. The 14ft also has the highest load capacity at 9,870 lbs and beefier axles.
Moving Furniture and Hauling
Need to get rid of old furniture, appliances, or general household junk? The 10ft works great for this unless you’re clearing out an entire house. The 12ft is ideal if you’ve got a full garage or basement to empty out.
Don’t Overthink It
Here’s my honest take: most people rent a bigger trailer than they actually need. Start with your best guess about volume, then call us. I can usually tell you pretty quickly whether you need to go bigger.
If you’re genuinely torn between two sizes, go with the smaller one first. You can always come back and swap up if you need to, and we’re local here in Englewood — it’s not a hassle.
